Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Intro

  • Paul vacationed in South America and realized that corporate America was not where he wanted to be
    • Paul then combined all of the things that he enjoyed and was good at
  • Paul bought one franchise (TGA) and grew it into 4 franchises
    • So he sold them, like a boss, and is now in charge of business development for TGA

Developing 24/7

  • Timing was everything when Paul sold his franchises
  • Customer service is evident no matter what position you hold in a company
    • Making sure that the customers feel their needs are met is crucial
  • Consumers can get just about anything, anywhere nowadays
    • Most services and products are being sold as commodities
    • So doing the little things (i.e. answering emails, returning phone calls, connecting on more than just a business level) matters more than ever
  • Reputation plays a massive role when approaching schools, especially in 2016, to implement your program
    • You need to try your best to be the expert in your field

We have a warrior on the podcast today…..as you all know I am working my way down the alphabet and got stuck at the word wimp. Sam Morris is a keynote speaker,  inspirational leader and creator of Zen Warrior Training. I am stoked to have Sam on the show. Welcome to the Nice Guys on Business podcast Sam!

Before we get into the meat of this episode Sam, lemme read this “One fateful night in 1999, my sense of wholeness was gone in a split second. Just a moment before, I was having the time of my life. Talk about that night.

You spend a mess of time on your blog talking about the Should Police. Help me identify them for a moment.

I love your “other half must die” philosophy, meaning your partner or anyone else for that matter complete you. Can we talk about that for a sec?

Tell the nice guy community why you are what you think you are? Age is just a number, your welfare is what you make of it and stop giving a fuck what other people think. Is that your attitude or is that that attitude of everyone that’s a winner?

Tell our community ok….tell our funknfans what they can do starting right now to change their life...even before they stop listening to this episode.

Mind and body...we all have those two things. What holds most of us back from getting maximum productivity and output from them.

Online courses, webinars and a book coming soon. Sign up for my newsletter at www.zenwarriortraining.com for info.

Private Zen Warrior Training phone sessions available now. Contact sam@zenwarriortraining.com to book.

Addressing the Relationship Elephant in the Room

  • How do you know when the grey line has been crossed?
    • You just have to keep your professionalism in place
    • Are you sharing more info than is necessary?
    • Are you calling each other nicknames?
  • You are risking your reputation with colleagues
  • Business people who drink are more successful, because most deals are made in relaxed environments - golf courses, bars, happy hours
  • If a superior is making a pass, you could laugh and say, “Oh, my husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend would find that so funny!”
  • Social skills are important
  • Can a man and a woman be friends?
    • Extremely uncommon
  • Research shows that men who have females friendships are better partners to their significant others

No time to get to this, but you can read the blog here: 12 worries that every entrepreneur has

Mike Michalowicz had it all, lost it all, and then wrote a book about what he learned from that. Hear his whole story on The Nice Guys today.

Find out answers to all these questions:

- You talk about this adding money into the bank first, profit first, but what happens if you have debt?

Expenses. It’s only $10, it’s only $20 a month but I am being fucked by small charges that all add up to a big Amex bill every month, how do I fix this?

What’s the goal of all of this?

You talk about in the book this windfall of cash from selling a business and subsequent ugly period. How did this scare you and why did you decide to change?

The reality of it is this is so simple, but what do you find is the biggest reason people haven’t changed to a “profit first” system?

How can I make my business and life profitable and do it immediately?

Sean Glaze: Aim for Excellence and Find Success on the Way

Intro

  • The best thing about where you work is the people and the most challenging thing is the people
  • Talent is essential but never sufficient

Team Building 101

  • Team building is not just team bonding
  • You need to know who you are so you can know who you need to surround yourself with
  • Just because you are not a lion or a golden retriever (personality trait profiles) does not mean that you cannot be a leader
  • People remember and respond to three things:
    • Images
    • Experiences
    • Stories
  • Successful Debriefing Summary:
    • What happened: Discuss the experience
    • So what: The better the analysis questions, the more our eyes are open to the people around us
    • Now what: what are the actions that you are going to take
  • Ask yourself: Who is the best teammate that you have ever had? What made them the best?
  • Technology is incredibly engaging, fun and different
    • However, high tech has low impact
    • The acquaintances that you develop through technology have a tendency to be shallow
  • Strong relationships are the foundation of the collaboration that every entrepreneur wants to build
    • You cannot connect the dots unless you have collected the dots
  • Our job is to create content
    • Is that building a relationship?
    • Is that posting a video or writing a blog?
  • Focus on the people, not the numbers
  • Aim for excellence, and you will find success on the way

Quadruple Threat Up the Wazoo

  • Nick is a strategist, speaker, author and educator (teaches at Iowa)
  • Daniel Pink said, from a marketing perspective, we live in a David and Goliath world where we are the Davids
  • Publishing today is very tricky today
  • We could all use a few people and a few dollars more
    • Nobody has the marketing budget that they want for everything that they want to do
  • Even the large company guys want to engage on a personal level
  • These are scrappy times
  • The Social Brand Forum (socialbrandforum.com) - a scrappy idea that catapults marketing and community

    • An improv mantra Nick applied to marketing:
      • Building things together, one block at a time

Common Theme in Marketing

  • Trying to do everything
    • More content/more marketing is not always better
    • Quality over quantity
    • Do not let a project be lukewarm

Dr. Karin - @DrKarinAnderson

Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell holds a master's degree in clinical psychology and a doctorate in developmental psychology.  She spent the early portion of her career as a psychotherapist for children in Chicago's child welfare system and then stepped into academia for ten years.  As a professor, she delivered a number of well-received presentations at national and international psychology conferences, covering issues such as identity development and family dynamics.

Despite these credentials, she's no stuffy academic peering down from the Ivory Tower. She get's into it with Doug on today's episode.

Intro

  • Do nice guys finish first?
    • In love, yes
  • You have got to be you
  • Dating losers is part of the journey
    • Don’t be so worried about how you are dating, just date, be present and learn

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is the Shit

  • We are telling ourselves things all day everyday, and our thoughts are linked to our emotions and ultimately our behavior
  • Changing our mindset takes some work
    • It is like a muscles, you have got to exercise
  • It is never too late for love
  • At the end of anyone’s life, the connections with other are the most meaningful things
    • Personal relationships affect business relationships and vice versa
  • The frustration from singles in this generation is that they feel very disposable
    • Swipe left, swipe right etc.
  • If someone didn’t give you a chance, they are not meant for you
    • Don’t take it as a rejection but rather a dodged bullet (i.e. mental shift)

Happily Ever… What?

  • You have to be willing to wait and experience the tension of being alone
    • Your alone time or lonely moments are preparing you for a stronger, more long-lasting happily ever after
  • The relationships that tend to be the strongest are those that enjoy their independent time
  • There is a difference between comprising and lowering your standards
  • Individuate yourself from your parents
    • You can love your mother but not do everything she tells you to do
    • You can assure your parents that you are “Ok”
  • If you are married and mentally single, there is a problem with that
    • There is a difference between being independent and having a ‘single’ mentality
  • There is no scorecard in a marriage
