"Greatness is a mindset and it is within every single one of you. So seize the fucking day and make it great" Liz Corah

Liz Corah was running an event centered around brain health/Alzheimer's research.

At this event, Liz blacked out/had a seizure and found out she had a brain tumor. Here are some of her thoughts that you'll hear on the Nice Guys today:

  • There was never a fear there, the mindset was to hit the ground running.

  • This tumor has allowed me to become a face for "Move for Minds."

  • Your body whispers to you, "I am tired." And we ignore it.

  • There HAS to be a work life balance. The balance helps to uplift the business side of the balance.

  • It is very easy to get to a place where you want to give up.

  • You are never given anything that you cannot handle.

  • If I can help others see that the little shit in their life does not matter by sharing my story, then that is going to be an inspiration.

  • Say to yourself, "This too shall pass."

  • "There is always a chapter in your life that will enhance a coming chapter in your life."

How to build a team of amazing pros that care about each other, work hard and do phenomenal work for clients - which translates to revenue and happiness for all, on The Nice Guys Today

Talking about:  How did you curate a bad-ass culture of professionals who have committed fully to the organizational goals while providing top-tier service to clients...all in the Marketing business

Nobody does it alone. Don't believe your own hype. Stay humble - work harder. Hire right - hire forever, and treat your compatriots like gold (because they are). Share the vision, create a culture of excellence where people's opportunity is merit-based and unlimited. Never eat alone.

Quotable: Nobody does it alone. Don't believe your own hype. Stay humble - work harder.

Quotable: Hire right - hire forever, and treat your compatriots like gold (because they are).

Quotable: Share the vision, create a culture of excellence where people's opportunity is merit-based and unlimited.

He’s been on the right bus with the right people and translated great relationships into big bucks as Chief Operating Officer of Hawke Media.

Tony helps answer the following questions for The Nice Guys:

What is marketing all about in 2016 and why do marketing companies have a tough rep to overcome?

Why is it that everyone that has a social media account and 1000 followers is all the sudden an expert.

Where do you see the marketing industry going and what does the frontier look like?

What’s dead in the marketing world?

What is old school to you that still hits a homerun?

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Casey- @caseyjfcfl

Casey Cornelius runs a national agency of collegiate speakers, has spoken on colleges campuses coast-to-coast, and keynoted national leadership conferences. Hear his story on The Nice Guys today

Here are some of the questions we asked Casey today:

How did you get into the college market? Was it because finally you found a  market that stays up late and drinks a lot?

How did you go about growing the company?

-What I find so great about For College for life is the cohesiveness of the team. Can you talk about that for a moment and how that type of culture comes together?

- One of the challenges you have I am sure is that most communication for the entire team is virtual. How do you maintain solid bonds with people when you don’t see them daily in an office for example?

How essential it is to know your market and how can the Nice Guy community find who their ideal customer is?

You bootstrapped your entire business right? How do you know where to spend you money? Marketing, sales, operations. It’s gotta be tricky to walk the financial balance beam.

What do you think sets FCFL apart from hundreds of other organizations out there that provide speakers to your market?

What actionable item can you see entrepreneurs walking away with after listening to you today?

  - How do you achieve personal balance in business and life?

You’re a jui jitsu family right? It that where you get out all your aggression? Because you seem like a really calm and gentle guy.

Laurence- @TheLazyGuru

The Lazy Guru: A Half-American Scot Who Lives in England

  • Stress can be created in any moment
  • The moment where all stress dissipates, where there are no problems/pressures…. never ever arrives
  • Life is going to continue to be complex, difficult and unpredictable so you might as well just relax right now
  • As some point, the ‘balance’ achieved during meditation has to become a continuous state
  • This is as much about enjoyment of stress as it is avoiding stress
    • Stress does not ever go away, you just have to learn to manage it
  • Everyone has a Survival mechanism that has 2 states:
    • A hyper-engaged state/hyper alpha state of fighting stress
    • An “in-denial” state

Action Steps

  • Often when we are selling something, we feel that we have to ‘push’ something
    • ‘Push’ ourselves
    • “Push’ our product
  • BUT THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF AN Effective SALES TECHNIQUE
  • We often do things that we think we need to do because we have been told that that is a good thing to do
  • When you are really into something and can add value you to it, the money will follow
  • Do not focus on your agenda in a conversation, just let the conversation go where it is going to go.
    • Let go of your expectations in a conversation

The Heart of the Lazy Guru - Making Space

  • People who are genuinely creative have a whole bunch of practices that people who uncreative people can benefit from massively
  • Creating space for something magical to happen is something that we all need to do
    • Creativity and spirit is essential for an entrepreneur
  • Making space is the discipline of carving out little spaces of time, daily, to do nothing
    • Most of us have a bunch of mind talk that gets in the way - it is chock full of concern and anxieties
    • Try to listen to them, not talk to them
  • Things will happen to you naturally in a way that will surprise you

Steamy Ménage à Trois

Intro

  • Shout out to Mohammad in Canada for the great artwork!
  • Alexa Carlin, check her out on Facebook
  • If you are a UK listener, Strick will be doing Facebook Live 2 am GMT!

Down to Biz

  • Laura Cannon and Stacey Sherman will be coming back in future shows
  • Stacey Sherman helps rock stars market themselves
    • Stacy is going to be a rock and roll connection to the show
    • With BIG names… like Journey…. Yeah, that’s right. Believe it!
  • Sunny ran a half marathon!
    • Michael Phelp's Under Armour training commercial made Sunny feel unprepared for her half-marathon
    • But we bet she did great!
  • The Cost of Silence for a Business
    • If most businesses are not following the social media discussion about them, they are screwing themselves over
    • For every problem that exists, there 28 others that you don't hear about

Action Steps

  • Ask your customers questions to gain feedback
    • Make sure the feedback process is easy
  • If a potential customer is unresponsive, say, "Hey, I don't want to keep bugging you. I just wanted to touch base and check if you still needed my services?"
  • "Bomb, Bomb" is a company that sends video text or image text. You can track it and see how many times someone opens it or watches it
  • So much of communication is nonverbal
    • It does not matter what your frame of mind is when you are sending an e-mail or a text, it the recipient’s frame of mind that matters
  • If you have a guest on a podcast, go the extra mile and send them a thank you gift.
    • Those small things can have a really big impact
  • When you give your customer the silent treatment, they can feel it!
  • Paying attention has become uncommon
    • So, PAY ATTENTION

Closing Lines

  • Sprint still sucks

Matt- @matthew_j_white

You could have 100,000 listeners for a show, have great content but if you don't optimize your info, no one is going to fucking find it let alone read it.

  • Whenever you create good content, people are going to want more
    • Get to a point where you help someone so much that they have to come to you to buy your services
  • You want to become a trustworthy source of knowledge in your community
  • Give the customer a taste of what you have to offer in several different presentations (blogs, articles, free eBook)
    • Then you give the customer the option to buy your services
  • If you are going to write a book, the best way to sell your book is to go out and talk about it!
    • The value of having written a book is increased credibility

Action Steps:

  • Answers peoples' questions
  • On your website, instead of trying to sell your products or info about you, why not design or advertise something to directly help the customer
    • For example, have your banner say, "How can we help you?" instead of "Buy x, y, and z!"

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

2 Different Types of Clients….

  • Have achieved success but now they feel like they are missing something
  • Others are leading heavily from the heart while trying to adapt to a capitalist market

At the end of people’s life, they are not talking about accomplishments but rather the things/people that they love.

Getting Into the Health and the Heart...

  • The work/life balance is very elusive, there really is no such thing.
    • Focus on work life integration. Because if you run your own business, there is no way to turn one type of life off.
  • The person that shows up every day to run a business is the same person going home to a husband or a wife.
  • What is most important is giving yourself the time and making the time to meditate. Start with just one or two minutes.
    • Meditation  grows our ability to handle the salty moments in life

Action Step to Feel Your Business More...

  • Close your eyes, really think about what life is like when your 80.
    • And you are looking back at what you deem "success" to be
      • Find 3 words to describe how that success feels
      • Take those words and make a way in your life to feel that a little bite more, right now
      • We really do not know what is coming next, so live those words

Laura’s Book - "The Conscious Entrepreneur"

  • Maximizing your potential for success, freedom and happiness
  • Being aware of you and what you do well
  • Talks about life/work integration
  • It is not just about business, it is about loving what you do
    • You can dig into it, with your heart and mind

Sunny Lake sneaks her "Sunny Side Up" business minute in at the last minute (at least SOMEBODY is giving business advice this episode!)

  • Russia and their doping athletes
    • 119 athletes were found to be faking drug tests
    • International Paralympics bans Russia
    • Sports that weren't banned: Badminton, table tennis, volleyball, golf and handball
      • What example is this setting for the kids?
      • Downside: National disgrace, millions of billions down the drain and setting a horrible example for the younger generation

How to Avoid "Overwhelmed"

  • Break it down into chunks and prioritize those chunks
    • Completely hone in on those top 5 chunks and GET THEM DONE
    • Then focus on the next 5 and the next
    • Keep the Schedule
  • Strick's Morning Routine
    • During the school year, Strick is up at 6 am and the girls are out of the house by 7 am
    • Strick has committed to do a 10 minute morning meditation and morning Yoga stretches
    • Strick needs to watch less television
  • Look at what you have to accomplish in the next 30 days and work backwards from that
    • Don't get sucked into the whirlwind of shit that other people have going on
    • Base your schedule on the things that are important in your life
  • When you stick to a routine, you are saving energy!
    • Every decision uses some brain power
  • Try some meditation (just 10 minutes) for a week, see firsthand the results
    • Meditation can help clear the "overwhelming schedule" fog
  • What's done, it's done
    • Our priorities change when we get older, and there is nothing wrong with that

“Smart Marketing Consulting” - Closing the gap between where you are and where you want to be. It is all about the message, the market and then your media.

How am I Going to Compete Outside of the Corporate World?!

  • The purpose of what the corporate world was doing was not fulfilling to Carrie anymore.
  • Instead of wide-net marketing, she jumped into honing in on technology and target that perfect client.
  • If does not matter what the benefits are, if you do not love what you do, it is not worth it.
  • Having a job that you hate, it takes away your motivation and energy even after hours.

Passion Search

  • Ask yourself: “If you didn’t have to make any money, what would you do?”
  • There is nothing you can do more than display your knowledge and what you’ve done to gain the trust and attention of your niche.
  • Capitalize on people trusting you. It is about creating value and not asking anything from them except for maybe a name and an e-mail address.
  • All too often, people in marketing are going up to people and first say, “Buy my stuff, buy my stuff.” There needs to be progression.

There are 3 key ways to grow your business:

  1. Increase the amount of customers
  2. Increase the average transaction overall
  3. Increase the average transaction per customer

  • Linkedin? Facebook? Twitter? Do I need to be on that?
    • The better or bigger answer is, “It depends.” Where is your niche?
  • How are you handling current customers? Are you giving value first?
  • WHO are you marketing to? Identify the specifics, try to describe the perfect client. Then use that to advertise smartly.

Carlos Gil, Self-Taught Marketer - “Marketing People Don’t Know Shit, it is Your Customer that Knows Everything”

  • In this generation, most marketers are force feeding their agendas to customers. They are not aware of the conversations that are happening on social media.
  • You build character when you get told, “no” but you also gain a lot of relationships.
  • How do we get people to think like a customer?
    • Think: “Would your own sales tactics drive you to buy anything?”
  • People are the true marketers, so teach them about the value that your product can give them. Brand Loyalty.
  • A lot of marketers see social media as a way to force feed content. Even with this new school avenue, old school rules STILL APPLY. People really want to engage with their friends on SOCIAL MEDIA, not to see what your new special deal is.
  • The key word in social media is “social”, you have to have conversations. This form of connections give businesses an opportunity to LISTEN.
  • Social media is like a piggy bank - interactions are like the pennies, nickels and dimes. The free value that you provide  for others are the larger bills that will add up long term.
  • Content needs to be informative, engaging and fun.
  • Think of your snapchat as your own private Youtube channel! Over 14% of U.S. snapchat users are over the age of 45.
  • There is no one out there better than the next guy, it is all about putting in the time and the work. Be a practitioner.
  • The best thing to do is to be open and upfront. It is up to you to train yourself to reach the next level.
  • If an employer is not supportive of your growth and development, that is not the right place to be.
